'Samcheok, a Cave Tourism Specialized City'... Government Selects as 'Regional Tourism Development Site'
Utilization of Daeiri Cave Area and Revitalization of Cultural Tourism Resources by 2024
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Samcheok City in Gangwon Province has been selected as a site for the 2021 Planned Contest-Type Regional Tourism Development Project organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
According to the province on the 25th, the "Planned Contest-Type Regional Tourism Development Project" is a program that supports local governments in revitalizing aging and idle cultural tourism resources in their regions and discovering potential tourism development projects.
Samcheok City's project, under the theme "The Cave is Alive! Establishment of Samcheok Cave Park 178," aims to utilize the Daeiri cave area by 2024 to develop ▲ cave healing ecological programs ▲ smart cave content ▲ media forest creation and festival development ▲ stay-type cave facilities ▲ and the revitalization of cave rebirth, establishing these as spaces for increasing local income and cultural enjoyment for residents.
The project will be promoted based on a self-planned, locally led initiative, with collaboration from Gangwon Province, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute, and support from expert advisory groups.

Meanwhile, regarding this contest project, five cities and counties in the province applied, and the provincial evaluation committee selected two candidate cities through a written review of the plan's feasibility. These candidates passed the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's screening process and were finalized.
