Song Young-gil, leader of the Democratic Party, said at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that morning, “The South Korea-U.S. relationship has entered a qualitatively different comprehensive change and a strategic turning point.”
Leader Song emphasized, “Above all, South Korea’s status has changed,” adding, “This was evident in the protocol and other courtesies, but more importantly, we felt that we have become a key partner discussing global issues such as the U.S.’s global industrial policy and joint vaccine production beyond related agendas.”
Regarding North Korea, he said, “The Biden administration’s surprise appointment of Deputy Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs Sung Kim as the special envoy for North Korea shows a strong will to accelerate North Korea policy centered on diplomatic methods,” and added, “The consistent signal from the Biden administration is that it is preparing for dialogue with North Korea. We will closely consult with the government on the ratification of the Panmunjom Declaration.”
On the termination of the South Korea-U.S. missile guidelines, he said, “After 42 years, South Korea has completely regained missile sovereignty, achieving a groundbreaking advancement in strengthening national defense,” and added, “This is also connected to the recovery of wartime operational control, and military sovereignty must be established.”
Yoon Ho-jung, floor leader of the Democratic Party, also evaluated at the meeting, “The national prestige was strongly felt at the South Korea-U.S. summit. Despite the short 3-night, 5-day schedule, the achievements of this visit to the U.S. were tremendous beyond imagination and could not have been better.”
Floor leader Yoon said, “This South Korea-U.S. summit evolved the alliance by more than two stages,” and “The two countries expanded the alliance beyond security to become the closest and most comprehensive advanced economic alliance that will lead the reorganization of the global supply chain of the world economy as well as overcoming the COVID-19 crisis. In that sense, the summit confirmed South Korea’s grown national power and future potential.”
