8 out of 10 Koreans Say "Tokyo Olympics Should Be Canceled" [Realmeter]
'Should be canceled' 78.2% vs 'Should be held' 13.4%
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] A public opinion survey revealed that nearly 8 out of 10 Koreans responded that the Tokyo Olympics should be canceled. This result comes amid divided opinions between concerns over the COVID-19 situation advocating for cancellation and views supporting holding the event through vaccination and quarantine measures.
On the 24th, Realmeter, commissioned by YTN's 'The News,' conducted and announced a survey on perceptions regarding the hosting of the Tokyo Olympics. The response "should be canceled" accounted for 78.2%, which was higher than the 13.4% who said "should be held." Those who answered "don't know" made up 8.4%.
The response favoring cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics was dominant across all regions. Especially in Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (85.3%) and Seoul (82.7%), the proportion of respondents supporting cancellation was high, followed by Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungcheong (78.8%), Daegu and Gyeongbuk (76.1%), Incheon and Gyeonggi (73.8%), and Gwangju and Jeolla (72.5%).
By age group, the majority also responded that the Tokyo Olympics "should be canceled," with the highest percentage in their 40s (87.8%). Responses in the 30s (80.4%) and 60s (80.3%) also reached the 80% range.
Negative responses regarding the hosting of the Tokyo Olympics were high regardless of ideological tendencies and party support.
Moderates (81.4%), progressives (78.2%), and conservatives (76.9%) all showed a distribution similar to the overall average response. By party support, more than 8 out of 10 supporters of the Democratic Party (84.1%) and about 3 out of 4 supporters of the People Power Party (74.3%) responded that the Tokyo Olympics "should be canceled."
