"Let's Revisit Shipping and Port Quarantine in the COVID Era" Webinar Held for COVID Response

A webinar refers to an online seminar conducted on a website, allowing participation via computer without spatial constraints, making it a discussion format suitable for the COVID-19 era.
The Busan Port Seafarers’ Welfare Committee (Chairman Professor Jeon Young-woo of Korea Maritime and Ocean University), together with MAC-Net and the Korea Maritime and Ocean University Seafarer Research Center, announced on the 21st that they will hold a webinar to comprehensively diagnose and discuss the port quarantine system.
This webinar will cover key issues related to Busan Port’s quarantine concerning the coronavirus, expansion of maritime telemedicine, COVID-19 quarantine standards, and response systems.
The webinar, sponsored by the Korea Shipowners’ Association, will be held on the 26th from 2 to 5 p.m. at the KSA Lounge on the first floor of the Maritime College Building at Korea Maritime and Ocean University.
The first topic is ‘COVID-19 and Ship Quarantine Centered on Busan Port,’ presented by Seo Jeong-tae, Director of Busan Port Authority, and Professor Lee Chang-hee of Korea Maritime and Ocean University.
The second topic, ‘Measures to Promote Seafarers’ Health through the Enhancement of Maritime Telemedicine Services and Legislative Measures,’ will be discussed by Professor Lee Ho-jin of Pusan National University and Professor Jeon Young-woo of Korea Maritime and Ocean University.
The third topic, ‘Preventive Standards and Strengthening Response Systems for Virus-Free Shipping,’ will be presented by Professor Son Hyun-jin of Dong-A University and Professor Choi Jin-ho of Korea Maritime and Fisheries Training Institute.
Regarding the presentation topics, in-depth discussions will be held by Seong Sang-gu, Secretary (Seafarer Policy Division, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries), Ahn Jeong-ho, Head of Headquarters (HMM Ocean Service), Professor Kim Jae-ho (Korea Maritime and Fisheries Training Institute), Team Leader Choi Jeom-sik (Busan Fire Headquarters), Chairman Jeon Jeong-geun (HMM Seafarers’ Union), and Dr. Yoo Jin-ho (Korea Register), with opportunities for Q&A for participants joining online.
Professor Jeon Young-woo is expected to advocate through this webinar for strengthening port quarantine services, support in case of patient occurrence, and expanding maritime non-face-to-face medical services for ships, which are medical blind spots, to all international voyages.

He will also address the establishment of a comprehensive management system and certification system, including onboard COVID-19 prevention standards, strengthened response systems for symptomatic cases, and emergency response support during navigation, thereby building a K-ship quarantine system. He is known to emphasize issues such as restrictions on seafarers’ movement due to COVID-19 and ways to enhance the competitiveness of Korean shipping.
