Filial Kia Niro EV, Racing Domestically and Internationally
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] The Kia Niro EV is navigating smoothly both domestically and internationally despite the launch of dedicated electric vehicle models such as the Ioniq 5 and EV6.
According to industry sources on the 24th, the cumulative sales volume of the Kia Niro EV in Europe from January to April increased by 161.2% year-on-year, reaching 13,580 units. In April alone, sales surged by 420.6% to 3,368 units.
Sales of the Niro EV remain steady in South Korea as well. The cumulative domestic sales from January to April rose by 4.5% year-on-year to 1,265 units. This comes amid growing public interest focused on dedicated electric vehicle models following the successive launches of the Ioniq 5 and EV6 by Hyundai Motor Company and Kia.
The smooth performance of the Niro EV contrasts with that of the Kona Electric. While the Kona Electric is on the path to discontinuation in the domestic market following the launch of the dedicated electric vehicle platform-based Ioniq 5, the Niro EV continues to expand its lineup this year by releasing a facelifted model and adding the ‘Prestige’ trim. Industry insiders expect Kia to launch a fully redesigned Niro model in the second half of this year or next year.
The reason the Niro EV continues to sell domestically, unlike the Kona Electric, is attributed to steady demand and its eco-friendliness. From January to April this year, the Niro accounted for 30% of the total cumulative sales of all Niro models, with consistent demand especially from corporate taxis. In response, Kia recently launched a package deal that offers free installation of one 100 kW charger when purchasing five Niro EV taxis, aiming to expand sales. Additionally, the Niro is marketed exclusively as an EV, hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV, discontinued), thereby building its image as an eco-friendly car.

An industry official stated, "Currently, it is difficult for automakers to meet market demand with only a few dedicated electric vehicle platforms and models. Until the number of dedicated electric vehicle platforms increases and the lineup expands, derivative electric vehicles like the Niro EV will continue to receive steady attention."
