Amid Rising Hate Crimes in the US, Reinvestigation of Asian American Woman's Murder Case from 4 Years Ago
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] In the United States, where hate crimes targeting Asians are occurring one after another, investigative authorities are reclassifying and reinvestigating a murder case that happened four years ago as a hate crime.
According to CNN and others on the 20th (local time), the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced on the 18th that it is classifying the murder case of Maggie Long, which occurred four years ago, as a hate crime and is conducting an investigation.
The FBI believes the suspect committed the crime with racial motives. Maggie Long, a Chinese-American woman, was killed by a man at her home in Bailey, Colorado, in December 2017 when she was 17 years old. At the crime scene, the FBI found evidence that Long struggled physically with the suspect. They also stated that the suspect appeared to have interfered after killing Long. The medical examiner ruled Long's death as a homicide.
Long's family emphasized, "This crime was committed against an Asian woman," and added, "Long's race and gender likely made the suspect think it was acceptable to commit the crime."
