[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Samsung Display announced on the 20th that it has recently introduced artificial intelligence (AI) technology into key areas of panel development to enhance research efficiency.
According to Samsung Display, the most representative area where AI technology has been introduced is the 'organic light-emitting diode (OLED) organic material design' field. Previously, engineers designed materials by manually altering molecular structures to find structures exhibiting desired characteristics. Recently, however, engineers set the desired characteristic values, and AI simulates countless scenarios to find the correct answer. AI technology replaces the effort of designing material structures considering multiple scenarios and verifying them one by one through experiments.
It takes just about 30 seconds for AI to design 100 types of organic material molecular structures and derive characteristic values. Samsung Display explained, "By enabling AI to perform numerous simulations in a short time, engineers can focus on high value-added tasks, thereby increasing work productivity."
Additionally, as display resolutions continue to increase, the difficulty of panel driving circuit design work has risen, leading to the application of AI technology in this field as well. When designing low-resolution panels, engineers could achieve desired results through repetitive drawing tasks, but for high-resolution panels such as 4K and 8K, the probability of malfunctions like circuit interference is high, requiring much time to achieve desired outcomes.
By utilizing AI technology, a server computer equipped with a 64-core central processing unit (CPU) can design and verify 640,000 driving circuits per day. Because the simulation search range is much broader, not only is the design speed faster, but the possibility of finding the optimal route for result derivation is also greater.
Based on these achievements, Samsung Display conducted an online lecture titled "Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Displays" at "Display Week 2021," hosted by the Society for Information Display (SID) on the 19th.
