[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Under the 7th elected administration, Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) is transforming into a ‘Leading Transportation Gwanak’ by creating a pleasant parking environment through the construction of public parking lots and facility complex development to resolve the chronic parking shortage in residential areas.
The district is increasing the parking lot securing rate by expanding public parking lots through the establishment of new public parking lots and public facilities year by year. With the expansion of Samsung-dong 2nd Public Parking Lot, Gwanak Elementary School facility complex, Bongnim Middle School idle land parking lot, and completion of Nangok Madang public parking lot project, a total of 243 parking spaces have been secured.
Focusing on areas with low parking supply rates, the district plans to establish more than 200 parking spaces across five locations by 2022, aiming to open two new public parking lots annually to solve the chronic shortage of parking spaces.
In particular, the ‘Namhyun Small Park Public Parking Lot,’ scheduled for completion in December, is expected to greatly contribute not only to alleviating parking difficulties near Sadang Station, which has a high floating population, but also to improving residents’ quality of life by providing cultural and recreational spaces.
The site, currently Namhyun-dong 1st Public Parking Lot (Namhyun-dong 1063-1), covers an area of 1,607㎡. A total project cost of 12.7 billion KRW, including 6.5 billion KRW from the city and 6.2 billion KRW from the district, will be invested. The ground level will be a park, and from basement level 1 to basement level 3, 97 public parking spaces will be created.
At 457-377 Jungang-dong, a small-scale public parking lot with 17 spaces is expected to be completed by June, and the Nanghyang-dong public parking lot (Nanghyang-dong 675-272, 269, multi-level 40 spaces) is currently in basic design, with efforts underway to complete the project by December this year.
Additionally, projects are being actively promoted from various angles to ensure steady supply of public parking lots, including the construction of Sangdo Neighborhood Park public parking lot, Nangok-dong urban regeneration area smart public parking lot, Gang Gam-chan-daero public parking lot, and expansions of public parking lots located in Boramae-dong, Haengun-dong, and Sillim-dong.
Furthermore, efforts are being made to solve the regional parking space shortage through the promotion of complex facility construction.
In July 2019, a complex facility with 151 public parking spaces and living sports facilities was built on the site of Seoul Gwanak Elementary School, spanning from basement level 2 to the 4th floor above ground. This not only improved the indoor sports environment for students but also opened the sports facilities to local residents, enhancing community cultural welfare and achieving more than triple benefits.
Currently, for the Inheon High School complex project, feasibility studies, consultations with related institutions, and resident opinion surveys have been conducted, and a project briefing session is being prepared for May. Continuous consultations are also ongoing with the school for the Shingwan Middle School complex project.
Going forward, the district plans to continuously create public parking lots through land acquisition in residential areas, school complex projects, and cooperation with related organizations, aiming to drastically improve the local parking shortage problem and enhance residents’ quality of life through a pleasant parking environment.
