Kyungsillyeon Requests Police Investigation into 36 Cases of Public Officials' Real Estate Speculation Allegations
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] The Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice (CCEJ) announced on the 18th that it has handed over 36 reports related to high-ranking public officials' real estate speculation suspicions, received through the Public Officials Real Estate Speculation Reporting Center, to the police.
CCEJ stated that over approximately two months, it received 51 reports of speculation suspicions and selected 36 cases deemed requiring investigation, which were requested for police investigation in three rounds. Through expert meetings, cases lacking essential information about the reporter or the report, cases where the subject was not a public official, and simple inquiries or consultations were excluded. CCEJ opened the Public Officials Real Estate Speculation Reporting Center on March 17 and has been receiving reports from citizens since then.
The reports received were categorized by real estate type as follows: 4 cases of buildings, 12 cases of farmland, 7 cases of apartments (including pre-sale rights), 4 cases of houses, and 24 cases of land, with land and farmland accounting for a large proportion.
The subjects suspected of speculation included members of the National Assembly, local government heads, local council members, police officers, local government officials, employees of Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH), Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH), and Urban Development Corporation staff.
By region, there were 21 cases in the metropolitan area (Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon) and 30 cases outside the metropolitan area. Among the metropolitan area, Gyeonggi had 13 cases, accounting for 25% of the total.
