Daewoo Shipbuilding Wins Order for One Large Offshore Wind Turbine Installation Vessel Worth 370 Billion KRW
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has secured an order for a large offshore wind turbine installation vessel. It is expected to gain a first-mover advantage in the offshore wind turbine installation vessel sector, which is anticipated to expand in the future market.
DSME announced on the 12th that it received an order for one large offshore wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) from Eneti Inc., based in Monaco. The contract amount is 368.2 billion KRW. This vessel will be built at DSME's Okpo Shipyard and is scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2024.
The vessel ordered this time measures 148 meters in length and 56 meters in width, capable of carrying and operating five large offshore wind turbines of 14 to 15 MW capacity at once, and can install turbines at depths of up to 65 meters. Additionally, it uses seven thrusters and a GPS system to precisely position itself at the installation site, then lowers and fixes its jack-up legs to the seabed, and installs the offshore wind turbines using a 2,600-ton large crane.
This vessel will be constructed based on the ‘NG-16000X’ design recently developed by the Dutch engineering company GustoMSC B.V. for large wind turbine installation vessels.
Globally, as environmental issues such as global warming and fine dust have become major concerns, interest and investment in renewable energy are increasing. Among these, offshore wind power is the fastest-growing sector. Moreover, recently, the capacity of offshore wind turbines has been increasing from below 10 MW to above 10 MW. In line with this growing market and the demand for larger turbines, the demand for large offshore wind turbine installation vessels is also expected to continue rising.
