Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), a national special university under the Ministry of Science and ICT, is preparing for a new leap forward.
UNIST (President Yong-Hoon Lee) was established in 2007 to nurture leaders in advanced convergence studies and to conduct research on basic science and core technology development.
Marking its 14th anniversary, the university held the ‘UNIST Development Foundation Inaugural General Meeting’ at 11 a.m. on the 12th in the university headquarters’ main conference room. As the foundation’s name suggests, its purpose is the ‘development’ of UNIST.
At the general meeting, nine promoters including President Yong-Hoon Lee attended and passed six agenda items including the adoption of the establishment purpose statement, taking the first step toward the foundation’s establishment.
The UNIST Development Foundation secures development funds to provide growth momentum for the university and carries out social contribution projects such as customized technology development for the region and the nation.
Its core projects include operating programs to raise development funds such as the ‘UNIST Vision Fund’ and the ‘Scholarship, Research, and Infrastructure Fund’ to achieve UNIST’s vision.
The foundation plans to complete its registration in May and launch its first project, recruiting ‘UNIST Support Houses.’
The establishment of the development foundation is a project emphasized by President Yong-Hoon Lee since his inauguration. He believes it is essential to secure growth momentum to prepare for UNIST’s new decade.
Over the past eight months, distinguished business leaders from the Southeast region were invited as founding executives, and various fundraising and community contribution projects were planned.
President Yong-Hoon Lee will serve as the inaugural chairman of the UNIST Development Foundation. The founding executives include Chairman Junho Lee of Duksan Hi-Metal, Chairman Hongseop Yoo of Yongjin Petrochemical, Chairman Yoonchul Lee of Geumyang Industrial Development, CEO Seungho Cho of Ulsan GPS (a subsidiary of SK Gas), CEO Youngsoo Choi of Samdu Comprehensive Technology, Chairman Wonhee Park of Donggang Medical Foundation, CEO Seongah Yang of Jogwang Paint, CEO Youngchan Choi of Sunbo Angel Partners, and Professor Hyunseok Shin of UNIST.
Accountant Sungtae Kang was invited as auditor, and Professor Hyunseok Shin, who is in charge of the UNIST Development Fund Operation Team, will serve as executive director participating in the foundation’s management.
President Yong-Hoon Lee said, “The establishment of this development foundation will be a solid foundation nurturing UNIST’s next 10 years,” adding, “It will serve as the most reliable growth platform for UNIST to strengthen its internal capabilities and grow together with the region.”
He added, “I would like to express special gratitude to everyone who willingly accepted participation in the foundation, and I ask for the local residents’ great interest in the community contribution projects and development fund programs through the development foundation.”
