Sollus Advanced Materials, First Domestic Mass Production of Special Aerospace Copper Foil... Supply to Airbus
Inserting Highly Electrically Conductive Copper Foil Layer into Composite Fuselage to Prevent Lightning Damage
Result of CFL's Geographic Advantage as Europe's Only Copper Foil Production Base and Customer-Customized Technology
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] Solus Advanced Materials (formerly Doosan Solus) announced on the 11th that it has succeeded in mass-producing the first aerospace lightning strike protection system (LSP) special copper foil in Korea.
The product was manufactured at Solus Advanced Materials' European subsidiary Circuit Foil Luxembourg (CFL) and supplied to Airbus, the largest aircraft manufacturer in Europe.
As the aerospace industry focuses on lightweight and new materials, there is a trend to expand the application of carbon fiber composites instead of conventional aluminum alloys for aircraft bodies. Solus Advanced Materials' success in mass production was possible because it was necessary to develop a safety device that inserts a highly electrically conductive material layer into the composite, which does not conduct current, to protect the body from lightning strikes.
The special copper foil supplied by Solus Advanced Materials to Airbus was developed with CFL's proprietary technology. It is a high-performance product that prevents physical damage to the aircraft surface and passengers during lightning strikes.
Fabienne Bojet, Head of the Copper Foil Business Division at Solus Advanced Materials, said, "The geographical advantage as the only copper foil production base in Europe and differentiated technology capable of manufacturing copper foil with properties optimized for LSP were factors that led to the supply to Airbus," adding, "This supply marks the opening of the gateway to the aerospace market, and we expect to fully benefit from the growth of the upstream industry in the future."
