Justice Party: "Stop 'Testing the Waters for Lee Jae-yong's Pardon'... The Ruling Party Must Declare Its Official Stance"
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] The Justice Party criticized Lee Won-wook, a three-term member of the Democratic Party of Korea who spoke about the need to pardon Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, saying, "Stop the 'Samsung Lee Jae-yong pardon trial balloon' targeting citizens immediately."
On the 4th, the Justice Party issued a statement saying, "Lee is currently the standing chairman of the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting and Communications Committee," and assessed, "His words carry a weight that is unusual for an ordinary lawmaker."
They continued, "Samsung Electronics achieved record-breaking sales in the first quarter despite the impact of COVID-19 and semiconductor sluggishness," and criticized strongly, "It is truly absurd to mention a pardon while talking about a 'crisis' regarding such a company."
They also demanded that the Democratic Party clarify its party stance on the pardon of Vice Chairman Lee. The Justice Party emphasized, "Since a new party leader has been elected, they should clearly state their position."

That morning, Lee appeared on BBS Radio's 'Kim Kyung-soo's Morning Journal' and said, "Considering the current supply situation of (automotive) semiconductors and investments in the United States, I think the need for a pardon for Vice Chairman Lee strongly exists," adding that the necessity for the pardon "exists not just slightly but strongly." This is the first time a lawmaker has publicly mentioned the need for a pardon.
