Public Union Korea Federation of Trade Unions Obtains Status as No.1 Union
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Through the official merger of the Public Service Labor Union Federation (Gonggongnochong), the upper organization of the Gangnam-gu Office Integrated Union, and the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (Hanguknochong), 1.4 million union members have been secured, establishing its status as the number one labor union.
Im Seong-cheol, head of the Seoul branch of the Integrated Public Officials Union, stated on May 1, Labor Day, "With the merger of Gonggongnochong, led by public officials' and teachers' unions, and Hanguknochong, we have now secured leadership in government negotiations."
He also said, "Currently, Hanguknochong's public official organizations include the Post Office Union, the Education Federation, and the Metropolitan Federation (scheduled to be converted to the Public Officials Federation). While the number of union members was not a major issue in union activities at the Gangnam-gu Office, it is true that at the headquarters level, as a minority labor union, there were many instances of being ignored and restrictions on speaking rights."
