Gwangju Office of Education Selects Winning Design for New Gwangju Hyodong Kindergarten Construction Competition
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] The design proposal submitted by Handul Comprehensive Architectural Office Co., Ltd. was selected for the new construction design competition of Gwangju Hyodong Kindergarten (tentative name).
The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 30th that this decision was made in the design competition for Gwangju Hyodong Kindergarten held the previous day.
Eight companies participated, and to ensure fair evaluation, the assessment was conducted through the Public Procurement Service, the project agency.
The winning design by Handul Comprehensive Architectural Office Co., Ltd. received high praise for maximizing the unique advantage of a natural terraced staircase form that adapts to the slope height of the site cross-section.
Gwangju Hyodong Kindergarten is currently being constructed on the site of Gwangju Hyodong Elementary School with a total floor area of 3,649.28㎡ and a four-story above-ground structure.
It is planned to have a total of 11 classes: 10 general classes, 1 special class, and completed classes.
With a project budget of 12.3 billion KRW, it is scheduled to open in March 2023.

Gwak Nam-gi, Director of Educational Facilities at the Gwangju Office of Education, said, “Gwangju Hyodong Kindergarten will prepare various educational space composition plans tailored to the characteristics of different age groups, such as enhancing imagination and thinking skills, and create a living environment that realizes the value of communication and participation among the children.”
