Jeonnam Province Launches Special Crackdown on Origin of Seafood Including Hwalgaribi
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province is launching a special inspection and crackdown on the origin labeling of seafood.
The province announced on the 30th that it will conduct a special joint public-private inspection and crackdown on the origin labeling of imported seafood, involving the relevant cities and counties, the National Fisheries Products Quality Management Service, and consumer organizations, until the 12th of next month.
This crackdown comes as consumer interest in origin labeling is increasing, but violations of origin labeling on imported seafood are occurring frequently.
To alleviate consumer anxiety and supply safe seafood, this special crackdown has been initiated.
The main items to be inspected are live scallops, live red sea bream, refrigerated skate, and refrigerated pollock, which have recently seen increased import volumes and high frequencies of origin violations.
Violations of origin labeling can result in penalties including imprisonment for up to seven years or fines up to 100 million won.

Wi Gwanghwan, Director of the Marine Fisheries Bureau of Jeonnam Province, stated, “To enhance the effectiveness of the crackdown, we will conduct joint inspections with private specialized organizations and take strict measures according to relevant laws if violations are detected. When purchasing seafood, please be sure to check the origin labeling and report any violations to the relevant authorities.”
