Seongdong-gu Collaborates with Hanyang University to Support Startup Leap Innovation Companies with 10 Billion KRW

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) will collaborate with Hanyang University (President Kim Woo-seung) to support about 60 advanced new industry innovation companies in the 4th Industrial Revolution, including artificial intelligence (AI), with approximately 10 billion KRW over two years by next year.
Based on the Seongsu-dong area, where ICT (Information and Communication Technology) companies are concentrated in the Seongsu IT Industrial Development Promotion District and Smart City Special Zone, securing an urban industrial base for new industries, the district was selected in March for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' “2021 Startup Package New Lead Institution Recruitment.”
Seongdong-gu, participating as a consortium institution with Hanyang University, is the only public-academic cooperation institution selected among the new lead institution recruitments, enabling it to carry out projects to discover and support promising “new growth advanced industry leap companies” within the region.
Accordingly, in March, the district signed a “Startup Leap Package Support Project Business Agreement” and plans to actively promote “scale-up” for promising leap-stage companies in the region to become the center of global unicorn companies.
The support fields for “new growth advanced industries” are linked to the semi-industrial area of Seongsu-dong and include AI (artificial intelligence), robot and drone fostering projects that actively drive innovative growth. Companies applying by the 22nd of this month will be reviewed and finally selected in May.
Among the government-supported projects worth about 10 billion KRW, selected companies will receive up to 200 million KRW (average around 150 million KRW) in commercialization funds, along with comprehensive support from discovering and investing in promising companies, product planning and development, sales and marketing commercialization support, to specialized leap-stage growth promotion programs, and practical support including finance, organizational restructuring, and accounting.
