Recruiting 4,800 Young Talents to Participate in the 'Digital New Deal'
Providing Opportunities for Data Education and Hands-on Experience with Public Data
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 28th that it will recruit 4,800 public data work-experience trainees in the first half of this year, who can develop future data capabilities through hands-on experience in field tasks such as public data opening, quality improvement, and collection, as well as data education.
The training program is a stepping stone course designed to support young people in growing into talents in the data field, consisting mainly of pre-education called Basic Data Competency Training (June to July) and on-site training (July to December). The Basic Data Competency Training is a 3 to 4-week course where participants acquire essential knowledge needed in the field, including basic concepts of data, data processing and analysis practice, public data opening, and quality diagnosis theory and practice.
The on-site training involves direct participation for about five months in the ‘Public Data Opening and Quality Improvement Acceleration’ project, a core initiative of the ‘Korean New Deal,’ together with public data holding institutions and data specialized companies.
Simultaneously with the on-site training, ongoing education such as data utilization project execution, mentoring, and contests will be conducted, and a separate course for non-majors is also provided. Young people preparing for employment in the data field can also participate in a two-week specialized education program (January 2022) that teaches data analysis and utilization after completing the work-experience training.
Graduates will be issued a certificate of completion in the name of the President of the National Information Society Agency, and those who complete the specialized education will additionally receive a certificate of completion with an assigned NCS code. The on-site training is a full-time program of 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, and a monthly training support allowance of approximately 1.83 million KRW will be provided.
Opportunities to participate in contests to implement ideas for utilizing public data will also be offered. Awards are planned for outstanding teams. Consulting will also be provided to support youth employment.
Applications can be submitted from the 6th to the 14th of next month on the Public Data Work-Experience Training website. The recruitment target is young people aged 19 to 34, with no restrictions on academic background or major, and selection will be conducted through a blind process. Recruitment is nationwide, and final candidates will be selected through document evaluation, online interviews, and education assessments.
Meanwhile, in the project first conducted last year, the average competition rate was 3 to 1, and a satisfaction survey of graduates showed that 73.6% of respondents were satisfied. The project also achieved notable results in public data opening by opening more than twice the amount of public data earlier than in 2019 and doubling the quality diagnosis of databases held by public institutions.
