Tesla, Dominating Subsidies, Likely to Launch Additional Supply Offensive
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Tesla, which swept domestic electric vehicle subsidies last year and achieved record performance, is reorganizing its lineup this year to monopolize subsidies again. Tesla plans to launch a volume offensive next month to take advantage of the hesitation of domestic electric vehicles caused by semiconductor parts issues.
According to the automotive industry on the 27th, Tesla is expected to supply a large number of electric vehicles to the domestic market next month. According to the industry, about 10,000 units of Tesla's popular models such as the Model 3 and Model Y will arrive in Korea through Pyeongtaek Port and others by the end of this month.
This is more than double the previous quarter and is interpreted as an effort to quickly capture the market before the electric vehicle subsidies, which are on the verge of depletion, run out. Meanwhile, domestic electric vehicles are still struggling due to delays in release caused by parts supply issues.
Accordingly, the electric vehicle subsidies that were concentrated on Tesla in the first quarter are likely to be repeated after the second quarter. In the first quarter, Tesla Korea sold 3,232 units, ranking first in domestic electric vehicle sales. On the other hand, domestic electric vehicles sold only about 2,300 units, affected by delays in release due to vehicle semiconductor supply issues.
The heated subsidy controversy from last year is also intensifying again. The amount of subsidies Tesla received last year reached 200 billion KRW. This accounts for about 30-40% of the domestic electric passenger car subsidies last year.
