"Tablets Folded Twice Too" Samsung, Galaxy Z Fold Tab Expected Next Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Cho] "Tablets fold twice as well." Following Samsung Electronics' foldable smartphones Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip, a tablet in the Z series is expected to be released. The 'Galaxy Z Fold Tab,' likely to launch early next year, features a double-folding method that folds the screen twice, and a teaser video is expected to be revealed as early as this summer's Unpacked event.
On the 26th (local time), according to IT specialized media PhoneArena and LetsGoDigital, Samsung Electronics is expected to release the next-generation Galaxy Z Fold Tab in early 2022.
Recently, Samsung Electronics applied for the trademark 'Samsung Z Fold' at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), listing smartphones and tablet PCs. This is interpreted as a move to expand the Z Fold lineup from smartphones to tablets. Until now, Samsung has named its tablets 'Galaxy Tab.'
The newly introduced Galaxy Z Fold Tab uses a dual hinge to fold the screen twice. Chinese IT media GizmoChina predicted that the Z-shaped double-folding method is likely. When fully unfolded, the screen size expands up to 10 inches. PhoneArena stated, "The exact size is not yet known," but expects a design similar to the Galaxy Z Fold2 smartphone.
Earlier, Samsung's patent images revealed by LetsGoDigital show a dedicated slot compatible with the S Pen on the edge of the folded screen. The back of the tab is likely to be equipped with dual cameras. The main camera module includes an LED flash.
PhoneArena reported that the Galaxy Z Fold Tab will support multitasking by allowing multiple applications to run simultaneously and will support Samsung DeX. The price is expected to be in the range of $1,400 to $2,000.
According to market research firm IDC, global tablet shipments last year reached 164.1 million units, a 13.6% increase compared to the previous year. Demand surged due to remote education and home entertainment amid COVID-19, showing growth. By manufacturer, Apple currently leads with a 32% market share, followed by Samsung Electronics at 19%.
