CDC Recommends Vaccination for Pregnant Women
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The United States is expected to resume vaccinations with Janssen, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, whose COVID-19 vaccine had been halted due to blood clot issues.
On the 23rd (local time), the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), an advisory body of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), held an emergency meeting and voted to resume Janssen vaccine administration, with 10 votes in favor, 4 against, and 1 abstention. This decision came just ten days after recommending the suspension of the Janssen vaccine.
ACIP decided that the benefits of the Janssen vaccine outweigh the risks of rare blood clots.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will require a warning that women under 50 years old face a risk of blood clots when receiving the Janssen vaccine. The company also agreed to this measure.
CNN reported that once CDC Director Rochelle Walensky signs the revised emergency use authorization for the Janssen vaccine, vaccinations with the Janssen vaccine will resume.
At a White House briefing that day, CDC Director Walensky also recommended that pregnant women receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
