Youn Yuh-jung, an actress from the film 'Minari,' is being predicted as the winner of the Best Supporting Actress award at the American Academy Awards. She is receiving overwhelming support both from expert analyses and netizen predictions.
As of the 21st (Korean time), Youn Yuh-jung received the highest number of votes, 4,563, in the Best Supporting Actress prediction poll on 'Gold Derby.' She far surpassed Maria Bakalova of 'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm' (587 votes), Glenn Close of 'Hillbilly Elegy' (415 votes), Olivia Colman of 'The Father' (165 votes), and Amanda Seyfried of 'Mank' (188 votes).
Gold Derby is a site that predicts results of various Hollywood award ceremonies in the United States. Youn Yuh-jung also received a unanimous vote (24 votes) in the prediction poll of twenty-four experts who had high prediction accuracy last year. Gold Derby forecasted, "She could become the second Asian actor to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, following Miyoshi Umeki (Sayonara) in 1957."
On the same day, the Associated Press also predicted the Academy results and mentioned Youn Yuh-jung as a strong contender for Best Supporting Actress. Reporter Lindsey Bahr said, "Initially, Amanda Seyfried was expected to dominate, but the flow changed with Youn Yuh-jung's appearance," adding, "Youn Yuh-jung will probably be the winner, and she should be."
Reporter Jake Coyle also said, "Youn Yuh-jung is definitely leading in this competition," forecasting the success of 'Minari.'
If their predictions come true, Youn Yuh-jung will become the first Korean actor to win an acting award at the Academy Awards. Additionally, she will be recorded as the third oldest Best Supporting Actress winner in history, following Peggy Ashcroft of 'The Road to India' (1984) and Josephine Hull of 'Harvey' (1950). She was born in 1947. Youn Yuh-jung could also become the sixth actor to win an Oscar for a performance in a non-English language. Previous actors who came close to winning include Sophia Loren (Italian) for 'Two Women' (1961), Roberto Benigni (Italian) for 'Life is Beautiful' (1998), and Marion Cotillard (French) for 'La Vie en Rose' (2007).
