GIST, Social Contribution Team 'Pium' Launch Ceremony Held
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, GIST) announced on the 19th that it held the inauguration ceremony of the social contribution group ‘Pium,’ consisting of 31 enrolled students, on the 16th and has officially started social contribution activities.
GIST plans to spread a healthy scientific culture and fulfill its social responsibility as a science and technology specialized university by having GIST students serve as mentors to conduct real-time online mentoring on interesting science topics for underprivileged youth.
The new name of the GIST social contribution group, Pium, carries the meaning of sowing seeds, watering, and fertilizing to bloom flowers, symbolizing the intention to blossom society through social contribution activities and spread the fragrance of GIST.
The GIST External Cooperation Team has been conducting various science camps and educational volunteer services for elementary, middle, and high school students since 2010.
Starting this year, GIST is integrating and expanding its social contribution and career mentoring programs to seek more systematic and efficient operational plans.
In particular, it aims to provide various educational and career experience programs that are difficult for students in underprivileged areas to access easily, offering opportunities to improve scientific learning abilities and creative thinking.
The GIST Knowledge Sharing Program will be operated in three diverse formats: ▲ Online Mentoring: online learning and career mentoring accessible anytime and anywhere ▲ Visiting Camps: mentoring conducted by visiting middle and high schools directly ▲ GIST Science Camp: inviting students to GIST to provide lectures by GIST faculty and opportunities to experience research institutes.
Kim Young-jip, Vice President for External Affairs at GIST, said, “We hope that more students will communicate, harmonize, and gradually grow through participation in Pium activities and take an interest in educational volunteer activities,” adding, “GIST will contribute further to the development of scientific culture and nurturing talent through specialized social contribution activities in various fields of science and engineering.”
Meanwhile, GIST was selected as a ‘2021 University Career Exploration Camp Operating University’ hosted by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity.
