"Reduce Car Speed for Safe Walking" Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Holds '2nd Safe Road Contest'
Inducing Effects on Pedestrian Safety and Vehicle Speed Reduction
[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 18th that it will hold the '2nd Safe Road Contest' to encourage low-speed driving of vehicles and to continuously raise awareness and expand interest in safe roads.
Safe roads refer to roads equipped with traffic calming facilities that reduce vehicle speeds to decrease pedestrian accidents. Representative excellent cases selected in the 1st design contest include Incheon Metropolitan City (Miraero), Gimcheon City (Gamho District), and Andong City (Ungbu Cultural Street).
The theme of this contest is 'Excellent Cases of Traffic Calming Facilities for Pedestrian Safety and Vehicle Speed Reduction,' and it will be divided into design and operation case categories for evaluation and awards.
The contest is open to local governments and public institutions and will run for a total of 54 days from the 19th to June 11. Entries can be submitted via email (anshim@kroad.or.kr).
The evaluation results can be checked on June 21 through the Korea Road Association website (http://www.kroad.or.kr), and the awards ceremony will be held on July 7, ‘Road Day.’ The total prize money is 20 million won, and certificates will be awarded by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Minister of the Interior and Safety, and the President of the Korea Road Association.

Juhyun Jong, Director of the Road Bureau at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, “We ask for the active interest and participation of local governments and other public institutions so that safe roads, which are effective in reducing pedestrian accidents, can be widely expanded.”
