April 16th is both National Safety Day and the 7th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster. The memorial ceremony was held to mourn the victims who tragically lost their lives during the disaster and to pledge to create safer schools.
Considering the COVID-19 situation, the ceremony was attended by the Superintendent of Education and executives at the director level or higher from the headquarters, who observed a moment of silence and laid flowers.
Superintendent Park Jong-hoon said, “Even now, on the 7th anniversary of the disaster, I cannot contain my sorrow as I listen to the anguished voices of the bereaved families. Our hearts to remember the pain of that day and share the grief of the families must lead to relentless efforts to protect the safety of children.”
