40s Male in Gwanak-gu Mother-Son Murder Case Sentenced to Life Imprisonment
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] A man in his 40s, the perpetrator of the so-called 'Gwanak-gu mother and son murder case' in a villa in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, where he killed his wife and son, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
The Supreme Court's 2nd Division (Presiding Justice Noh Jeong-hee) on the 15th upheld the original ruling that sentenced Cho Mo (40), who was charged with murder, to life imprisonment.
The court stated, "After comprehensively reviewing the indirect evidence, there is no error in the original court's judgment that recognized the charges as guilty, nor any violation of the principles of logic and experience, no exceeding the limits of free evaluation of evidence, no insufficient trial, and no legal error regarding the principle of evidence-based judgment."
Cho is accused of stabbing his wife A (41) and son B (6) to death with a weapon at his home in Bongcheon-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul, during the night of August 21 to 22, 2019.
The prosecution focused on the fact that no one other than Cho and the victims was present in the house at the estimated time of death and indicted Cho as the perpetrator. However, there was no murder weapon or CCTV footage at the crime scene.

The first and second trials accepted the prosecution's claims and sentenced Cho to life imprisonment. The second trial court judged, "The victims had dinner at 8 p.m., and their stomachs were not emptied until 1:30 a.m. the next day after Cho left the scene," adding, "Based on experience, it can only be concluded that something happened while Cho was at home."
