Mayor Heo Seong-mu Visits National Assembly: "The 'Changwon Industrial Line' Connecting Jinhae New Port Must Be Included in the National Railway Network"
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] Mayor Heo Seong-mu is continuing his communication efforts to resolve key issues that will strengthen Changwon's urban competitiveness and accelerate balanced development in the southeastern region.
According to Changwon City, on the 14th, Mayor Heo visited the National Assembly and actively requested support for the inclusion of the Changwon Industrial Line in the 4th National Railroad Network Construction Plan and the operation of the Suseo High-Speed Railway (SRT) on the Gyeongjeon Line.
First, discussions were held regarding the inclusion of the 'Changwon Industrial Line' in the 4th National Railroad Network Construction Plan. Since last year and into early this year, Mayor Heo has repeatedly appealed to the government and the National Assembly about the necessity of the Changwon Industrial Line.
During meetings with lawmakers, Mayor Heo explained the necessity of railroad construction, stating that with the upcoming development of Jinhae New Port and the industrial complex concentration in the Changwon-Daegu area, not only will rail transport capacity be insufficient, but severe congestion is also expected on the Jungbu Inland Expressway.
He also emphasized that the establishment of a rail logistics network between Changwon and West Daegu is a national policy project reflected in the 5th National Comprehensive Plan, and that the preliminary review report on the budget under the jurisdiction of the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee this year explicitly includes a supplementary opinion to consider the inclusion of the Changwon Industrial Line when establishing the 4th National Railroad Network Construction Plan.
To secure rail-centered transport capacity at Jinhae New Port, which will become a logistics hub for Korea’s logistics industry and serve as a Northeast Asia logistics platform extending to the Eurasian continent, Mayor Heo reiterated that the 'Changwon Industrial Line' must be included in the 4th National Railroad Network Construction Plan.
He also requested policy support for the operation of the Suseo High-Speed Railway (SRT) on the Gyeongjeon Line. Mayor Heo stressed the necessity of the project, pointing out that while demand for metropolitan travel is rapidly increasing every year, the SRT routes are limited to the Gyeongbu and Honam high-speed lines, causing considerable relative deprivation among Gyeongjeon Line users.
