Hunmaengjeongeum and Joseon Culinary Methods... Reflecting on the Value of Modern and Contemporary Cultural Heritage
The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History Hosts 20th Anniversary Special Exhibition for National Registered Cultural Heritage
The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History announced on the 14th that it will hold a special exhibition in collaboration with the Cultural Heritage Administration to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the introduction of the National Registered Cultural Heritage system. The exhibition, titled "Registered Cultural Heritage, Seen from Gwanghwamun," will be held from June 16 to July 18 in the 3rd-floor special exhibition hall. It showcases traces of efforts to autonomously integrate tradition and modernity amid the turbulence of modern and contemporary history through 46 registered cultural heritage items and about 80 artifacts and video materials.
The National Registered Cultural Heritage system was introduced in 2001 to prevent the loss and damage of modern and contemporary cultural heritage amid rapidly growing social changes. As of June 5, a total of 901 items are registered, including 586 real estate properties such as buildings and facilities, and 315 movable properties.
This exhibition features items such as the manuscript of a major dictionary from the late Joseon period, artifacts related to the creation and dissemination of Hunminjeongeum, the Shanghai edition of the Independent Newspaper, the handwritten manuscript "Pyeonbok" by Yi Yuk-sa, the Joseon Cooking Method book, artifacts from Sohn Kee-chung's marathon victory at the 11th Berlin Olympics, and a Yangdan Arirang dress. Architectural structures such as the Busan Temporary Capital Government Building and Incheon Seonrindong Gonghwachun are also highlighted through three-dimensional documentaries. On July 13, an academic conference titled "Viewing Modern and Contemporary History through Cultural Heritage" will be held to share the achievements of the 20 years since the introduction of the National Registered Cultural Heritage system.
