This academy aims to re-examine the achievements of Admiral Jang Bogo’s global maritime activities, who dominated East Asian maritime trade centered on Wando Cheonghaejin, in Mokpo, the central city of the southwestern region, and to spread them nationwide and globally.
It also embodies the hope that Admiral Jang Bogo will serve as a shared role model to realize the global future vision of the Mokpo area and that the Mokpo region will leap forward as the ‘World Capital of Islands.’
The academy consists of five lectures including field trips. At the opening ceremony on the 16th, following congratulatory remarks by Kim Jong-sik, Mayor of Mokpo, and Cheon Deuk-yeom, Director of the Korean Studies Honam Promotion Institute, mini-lectures will be given by Kim Deok-ryong, Chairman of the Jang Bogo Global Foundation (“Jang Bogo and the 21st Century”), and Kim Seong-hoon, the inaugural chairman (“Vision of Mokpo as a Global City and Jang Bogo·Kim Dae-jung”).
On the 23rd, former Mokpo National University President Ko Seok-gyu will lecture on “Looking Back at Mokpo’s Opening Port in the Global Era,” and on the 30th, Professor Yang Se-young of Sehan University will speak on “Mokpo’s Overseas Chinese Community, Emerging as an East Asian Hub Port.” On the 7th of next month, Professor Kang Bong-ryong of Mokpo National University will give a lecture on “Jang Bogo’s Global Maritime Activities and the Mokpo Area.”
In the fifth week, the day will be changed to Saturday, the 15th of next month, when a field trip on the theme “International Space and Modern Cultural Heritage of Mokpo during the Opening Period” will be conducted, guided by Professor Choi Seong-hwan of Mokpo National University, together with the academy participants.
Lee Kyung-tae, Branch Chief of the Mokpo Branch, stated, “Holding the Jang Bogo Academy at the Kim Dae-jung Nobel Peace Prize Memorial Hall also symbolizes the meeting of two heroes of the southwestern region, Jang Bogo and Kim Dae-jung,” and added, “The 1st Mokpo Jang Bogo Academy was prepared focusing on themes illuminating Mokpo’s vision as a global city, but in the future, it will expand beyond Mokpo to reflect on the past history of the southwestern region and explore a shared global future vision for the region.”
