Rural Public Corporation Develops Quality Control Model for Reservoir Water Level Measurement Data
Using Filter Techniques... Automatic Data Correction and Outlier Detection
Helping to Establish Drought and Disaster Countermeasures
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Korea Rural Community Corporation announced on the 13th that it has developed a quality control model that automatically corrects reservoir water level data and detects outliers using a filtering technique.
Among the reservoirs managed by the corporation, more than 1,600 reservoirs with an effective storage capacity of over 100,000 tons are equipped with automatic water level gauges. These gauges automatically measure water levels every 10 minutes via wireless communication.
Until now, it has been difficult to immediately correct data errors caused by device malfunctions or sensor failures in real-time, resulting in manual correction work for the measured data.
The corporation has been conducting research to advance quality control since last year and has now developed a quality control model for reservoir water level data.
The new model uses the Hampel filter technique to automatically detect outliers such as missing measurements or maximum/minimum deviations directly within the system. It applies linear correction, cubic curve correction, and filter correction to automatically correct outliers in real-time.
Additionally, by establishing quality classification standards, the reliability of the measured water level data has been enhanced. This allows for immediate distinction of the precision in data production, analysis, and storage.
Based on this research achievement, the corporation will apply the advanced water level measurement program starting this year and open the related data to the public through the Rural Water Comprehensive Information System for easy access.
Kim Insik, president of the corporation, stated, "This R&D has enabled the acquisition of fundamental hydrological data that forms the foundation of the big data era," and added, "The corporation will continue efforts to establish a data-driven water management response system to enhance the effectiveness of disaster response caused by climate change."
