Yeongdeungpo-gu Opened 913 Off-Street Parking Spaces Last Year... Ranked 1st Among Seoul Autonomous Districts
2020 Project Results: 913 Parking Spaces Opened, Most Among Seoul Districts... Total of 1,343 Building Parking Spaces Secured and Opened to Residents So Far
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) achieved a remarkable feat last year by securing 913 parking spaces in building-affiliated parking lots as resident parking through the 2020 affiliated parking lot opening and sharing support project.
This was the highest number of spaces recorded among Seoul's autonomous districts last year.
The district signed agreements to open (including extended opening) affiliated parking lots with 14 buildings, including Lotte Mart Seoul Yangpyeong Branch and Daerim Woosung Apartments, providing parking spaces to residents and office workers suffering from parking difficulties.
As of March this year, the district operates 1,343 parking spaces in 28 local buildings as open parking lots, focusing on spreading the value of sharing in the community under the motto "Sharing and cooperating benefits everyone."
Above all, the expansion of these "appreciated shared parking lots" is emerging as a sustainable and feasible alternative to alleviate parking difficulties in residential areas, given the clear spatial and financial limitations of constructing public parking lots in residential neighborhoods.
The affiliated parking lot opening and sharing support project implemented this year targets corporations, apartments, religious facilities, and schools, with conditions that building owners apply for participation, open at least 5 parking spaces (day/night or full-day opening), and maintain opening for at least 2 years.
When signing opening agreements, the district provides various incentives, including subsidies of up to 25 million KRW for parking facility improvements (barriers, floor repairs, CCTV installation, etc.), making every effort to secure parking spaces.
Participants in the parking lot opening project can not only renovate aging parking facilities but also generate revenue from operating the open parking lots.
Dangsan Daewoo Apartments in Yeongdeungpo-gu (located in Dangsan 1-dong), which expanded the number of open spaces and signed extended opening agreements last year, stated in an interview with Seoul City, "The affiliated parking lot opening project generates about 100 million KRW annually. This revenue is returned to residents, providing approximately 24,000 KRW per household per month in management fee support."

Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, "Through the affiliated parking lot opening support project tailored to the characteristics of each facility such as companies, schools, and apartments, we will continuously discover and share idle parking spaces. By promoting the parking lot opening project through public-private cooperation and spreading a culture of sharing in the community, we will strive to resolve the chronic parking difficulties."
