US Congress Introduces Resolution for Comprehensive Peace Declaration on the Korean Peninsula
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] A comprehensive resolution urging peace on the Korean Peninsula, including a declaration to end the Korean War, the establishment of a North Korea-US liaison office, reunions of separated families, and humanitarian exchanges, will be introduced in the US House of Representatives.
On the 10th (local time), Congressman Brad Sherman, a member of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, stated this while attending an online forum hosted by the Korean American Political Action Committee (KAPAC), a Korean American voter organization.
Congressman Sherman said, "It is now time for a diplomatic peace treaty or peace declaration between North Korea and the US," adding, "Along with denuclearization, the military confrontation between the two sides must be resolved, and a declaration to end the Korean War, which has lasted for 71 years, must be made."
He also said, "There is a need to establish liaison offices in Pyongyang and Washington DC to advance humanitarian issues such as North Korea-US separated family reunions," and "The Kaesong Industrial Complex should be resumed with a long-term perspective within the framework of diplomatic agreements among South Korea, North Korea, and the US."
He mentioned the necessity of changing the direction of North Korea policy. He pointed out, "The North Korea policy based solely on 'Complete, Verifiable, and Irreversible Denuclearization' (CVID) and sanctions, which has continued for the past 20 years, has never succeeded," adding, "Being fixated on the CVID principle, no diplomatic progress has been made, and only sanctions against North Korea have been strengthened."

He said, "Excessive economic sanctions push North Korea into a survival corner and may rather cause North Korea to export nuclear weapons to third countries," adding, "The goal should be to prevent North Korea from expanding its nuclear weapons production capabilities and to freeze and manage the increase of North Korea's nuclear weapons."
