On the morning of the 8th, Oh made these remarks and shared his thoughts at the People Power Party election counting situation room in Yeouido, Seoul. According to the National Election Commission, as of 12:41 a.m. that day, the vote counting rate for the Seoul mayor by-election was 64.95%, and Oh had a vote share of 57.01%.
He said, "This moment should truly be a time of joy, but I cannot contain the heavy responsibility pressing on my heart," adding, "There are so many Seoul citizens suffering great pain and inconvenience due to COVID-19, and when I think about how to comfort, embrace, and care for them, I cannot help but feel a great and solemn responsibility."
Oh continued, "Giving me this opportunity to work again during such a critical time is a clear mandate to skillfully and swiftly resolve the pressing issues one by one and to embrace the many citizens who are suffering," and said, "During the past five years, I worked with my head. But as I promised, now as mayor, I will work with a passionate heart. I will frequently visit those who must be embraced, cared for, and who are in urgent need, and I will diligently work as a mayor who prioritizes resolving their issues first."
He did not forget to mention the victim of sexual harassment by the late former Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon. Oh said, "That victim could be any one of our sons or daughters," and added, "From today, I will make sure that the victim can return to work with a truly peaceful mind and focus on their duties."
Oh also expressed gratitude to Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, who competed with him during the opposition unity process. Oh said, "Although we fiercely competed during this election period, I sincerely thank Leader Ahn for doing his best after unification to achieve the opposition’s victory." Ahn visited the People Power Party election counting situation room that day to congratulate Oh.
