Police Request Arrest Warrant for Truck Driver Involved in Jeju 4-Vehicle Pileup
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters reporters Park Chang-won and Hwang Jeong-pil] The police have applied for an arrest warrant for the truck driver involved in the four-vehicle pileup in Jeju that resulted in 3 deaths and 62 casualties.
Jeju Eastern Police Station announced on the 7th that they have applied for an arrest warrant for truck driver A, who has been booked on charges of violating the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling (negligent homicide and injury).
A is accused of driving a 4.5-ton truck around 6 p.m. the previous day at the intersection near the entrance of Jeju National University in Ara 1-dong, Jeju City, and causing a chain collision involving a 1-ton truck and two buses ahead.
As a result of the accident, three people died: bus passenger B (74, female), and C (32) and D (29), who were at the bus stop. One person was transported in cardiac arrest but is reported to be unconscious.
About 50 others, including the 1-ton truck driver, bus passengers, and pedestrians, were also taken to hospitals for treatment.
It was reported that each of the two buses had about 30 passengers on board.
The police stated that A reportedly said, "The brakes did not work."
The police estimate that the accident occurred due to brake fade caused by overheating of A’s vehicle brakes (loss of braking power due to continuous brake use on a downhill slope).
