Train Derailment in Eastern Taiwan... "At Least 41 Dead, 61 Injured"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] A train traveling to the eastern region of Taiwan derailed inside a tunnel, killing at least 41 people and injuring 66.
According to major foreign media on the 2nd, around 9 a.m. that day, a train heading to Taitung derailed inside a tunnel north of Hualien, with part of the train colliding with the tunnel wall.
Taiwan fire authorities stated that the train, consisting of 8 cars, was carrying 350 passengers, of whom 41 died and 66 were injured and transported to hospitals. Local media reported that two people still remain inside the train.
AFP reported that a truck slipped from a cliff onto the tracks, and the train entering the tunnel collided with the truck, causing the accident.
However, foreign media reports differ on the timing of the accident, whether it occurred while the train was entering the tunnel or while it was exiting.
