[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seoul Metropolitan Council member Kwangho Lee (Democratic Party, proportional representation) moved to the Transportation Committee last July and has been visiting Seoul’s transportation-related sites to identify and improve issues, putting into practice his commitment to conduct field-oriented legislative activities aimed at enhancing citizens’ safety and convenience.
In 2020, he visited the garage for the disabled call taxis operated by the Seoul Facilities Corporation and facilitated improvements to the poor conditions of the garage.
In February of this year, he also visited the Chungjeongno Center of Seoul Metro, where he checked the status of the 3D-based integrated station management system and its operation, and encouraged the related staff.
Continuing his field-oriented legislative activities, on the 2nd, Council member Lee visited Sangdong Station in Bucheon, which is managed under consignment by Seoul Metro. Sangdong Station was the site of an electric shock accident involving an employee on March 9 while inspecting the energy storage system in the station’s substation.
At the energy storage system in the substation where the accident occurred, Council member Lee received an explanation from the head of Seoul Metro’s Safety Investigation Department regarding the accident’s circumstances and the measures taken so far. He also inspected various electrical facilities and fire extinguishing equipment installed in the substation and confirmed the response methods for emergencies such as fires.

Council member Kwangho Lee stated, “In the event of a fire in the substation, the gas from the automatic gas fire extinguishing system is carbon dioxide, which poses a risk of suffocation if inhaled by employees or passengers. Replacement with eco-friendly materials is required. Although Seoul Metro is struggling with chronic deficits, budgets related to safety must be reflected.” He emphasized, “When entering hazardous facilities, procedures must be followed, and a system for double or triple checks and confirmations regarding safety should be established. I ask that efforts be made to ensure the accident is handled smoothly.”
