Seoul Gangseo-gu Provides Emergency Disaster Relief Fund of 1 Million Won to Artists
Applications Accepted Until the 13th for Artists Holding Art Activity Certificates with Household Median Income Below 120%, Payments Scheduled for May
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Noh Hyun-song) will provide emergency disaster relief funds of 1 million won to local artists who are struggling due to COVID-19.
This is intended to support the livelihood of artists whose activities have been suspended due to consecutive cancellations of performances, exhibitions, and festivals, and to help them continue stable creative activities.
The support target is artists residing in Gangseo-gu as of the announcement date who possess an Artist Activity Certificate (issued by the Korea Artist Welfare Foundation). In addition, the household income must be below 120% of the median income standard. However, basic livelihood security recipients, Seoul-type basic security recipients, and 2020 Korea Artist Welfare Foundation creative preparation fund beneficiaries are excluded from support.
The application period is until April 13, and applicants can submit the application form, Artist Activity Certificate, and related documents via email or fax to the person in charge, or visit the Gangseo-gu Office Culture and Sports Division to submit in person.
Detailed information can be found on the ‘Gangseo-gu Office website - Notices/News’, where the necessary application forms can also be downloaded.
The disaster relief funds will be paid in May after a process of verifying eligibility and preventing duplicate payments to select recipients.
A district official said, “We hope this disaster relief fund will help cultural and artistic professionals whose income has sharply declined due to COVID-19,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to implement effective policies so that local artists can overcome the COVID-19 crisis and continue their artistic activities.”
The number of registered artists residing in Gangseo-gu is 2,017, and the district has secured 500 million won to provide disaster relief funds to about 500 local artists.
