Motional to Unveil 2023 Ioniq 5-Based Robotaxi
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Motional, a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and the U.S. autonomous driving technology company Aptiv, is set to unveil a robo-taxi based on Hyundai's first dedicated electric vehicle, the Ioniq 5, in the United States in 2023.
According to industry sources on the 31st, Motional announced through the company blog that the Ioniq 5 will serve as the vehicle platform for the next-generation robo-taxi.
Motional explained, "This is the first robo-taxi bearing the Motional name, representing the fusion of electrification and autonomy, the most innovative technologies in mobility, and signaling the future of transportation."
Starting in 2023, Motional will supply the largest-scale mass-produced robo-taxi to the platform of the U.S. ride-sharing service company Lyft, expanding its autonomous driving services.

The Ioniq 5-based robo-taxi will be equipped with Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities. Level 4 autonomy means the vehicle can perceive and make decisions on its own, requiring no driver intervention even in emergency situations.
