Awarding the Gold Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit to LG Uplus Vice Chairman Ha Hyun-hoe and Others in Commemoration of 'Commerce and Industry Day'

190 Meritorious Persons Awarded
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] To commemorate 'Commerce and Industry Day,' the government awarded the Gold Tower Industrial Medal to three individuals, including Ha Hyun-hoe, Vice Chairman of LG Uplus.
On the 31st, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that it held the '48th Commerce and Industry Day Commemorative Ceremony' at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry International Conference Hall, attended by about 60 people including meritorious persons and vice chairmen of the Korea and Seoul Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
The government established 'Commerce and Industry Day (May 12)' as a legal holiday in 1964 to promote the advancement of commerce and industry. In 1973, five related commemorative days, including Electricity Day and Small and Medium Business Day, were integrated and renamed as Commerce and Industry Day (October 31). Since 1984, Commerce and Industry Day has been changed to the third Wednesday of March every year, and a commemorative ceremony has been held annually.
At the ceremony, awards were presented to 190 meritorious persons to encourage businesspeople who contributed to overcoming crises and strengthening industrial competitiveness. The highest honor, the Gold Tower Industrial Medal, was awarded to Vice Chairman Ha, who led innovation in the IT industry including the world's first commercialization of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs; Kim Mu-yeon, Chairman of Pyeonghwa, who contributed to the high value-added development of the textile industry such as carbon fiber development; and Kwon In-wook, CEO of PU Sys, who spearheaded eco-friendly technological innovation including the development of eco-friendly polyurethane. In addition, 187 businesspeople received Silver Tower, Bronze Tower, Iron Tower, and Stone Tower Medals, Industrial Medals, as well as commendations from the President, Prime Minister, and Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Choi Tae-won, the newly appointed Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said in his commemorative speech, "We have endured well through the COVID-19 crisis, and behind that was the government's K-quarantine, voluntary participation of the people, and the dedication and hard work of businesspeople." He added, "I will respond to the 'new entrepreneurial spirit' expected by society and, as Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, communicate and empathize with various stakeholders."
