'Punched and Choked to Unconsciousness'... Asian Man Assaulted in New York Subway
[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] An incident occurred in the New York City subway where an Asian man was indiscriminately assaulted until he lost consciousness, prompting the police to launch an investigation. Authorities are focusing on the possibility of a hate crime against Asians and are urging witnesses to report any information.
On the 29th (local time), the New York City Police Department's Hate Crime Division issued a public wanted notice for a man who indiscriminately assaulted an Asian American on the J line subway traveling from Brooklyn to Manhattan, rendering him unconscious.
The video of the assault shared by the police has been spreading on social media (SNS) since that morning. The footage shows the brutal assault without any filtering.
The video begins with a man, appearing to be a person of color wearing a black hat and mask, punching the Asian man's face. The scene escalates into a fight between the two.
The fight quickly turns into a one-sided assault. The perpetrator repeatedly punches the Asian man's face and even chokes him with his arm as the victim falls. After the Asian man loses consciousness and collapses on the subway floor, the assailant disappeared at the Kosciuszko Street Station. The victim's condition has not been disclosed.
Fox News reported, "The punches continued even after the victim collapsed. It is a disgusting scene to witness."
The political scene in New York was also shaken. Grace Meng, a Chinese-American U.S. Representative from Queens, condemned the incident as a "disgusting assault." Representative Meng stated, "The victim was assaulted and choked until losing consciousness." She criticized, "Assaults against Asians are disgusting and unconscionable acts."
During the assault, no passengers in the subway car intervened. The only response was one passenger shouting for the assault to stop. Regarding this, Representative Meng pointed out, "It is concerning that no one stopped the assault."
