50 Killed in Indiscriminate Shooting on Myanmar Military Day
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] On the 27th, Myanmar Armed Forces Day, the military and police opened indiscriminate fire on citizens protesting against the coup, killing at least 50 people.
According to major foreign media reports and eyewitness testimonies, at least 50 people were killed by gunfire from the military and police across Myanmar, including the largest cities Yangon and Mandalay, on that day alone.
Sasa, the UN special envoy appointed by the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, which acts as the interim government, criticized the military in an online forum, calling it a "day of shame" for the military.
Special Envoy Sasa added, "The military generals are celebrating Armed Forces Day after killing more than 300 civilians."
According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, a Myanmar human rights organization, the confirmed death toll from military and police violence as of the previous day was 328.
Meanwhile, the military held a large-scale military parade today to commemorate the 76th Myanmar Armed Forces Day, mobilizing many soldiers and weapons.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing warned, "Violent acts that undermine stability and safety are inappropriate and unacceptable."
