Families of 6·25 Abductees Win Damages Lawsuit Against North Korea and Kim Jong-un
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The family of a victim abducted to North Korea during the Korean War won a damages lawsuit against North Korea and Chairman Kim Jong-un.
On the 25th, Judge Kim Young-soo of the Civil Division 71 at the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of the plaintiff, Choi, the son of the abducted victim, ordering the defendants to pay 50 million won in damages. Choi's father, who was a police officer during the Korean War, was abducted by North Korean forces in Hapcheon, Gyeongnam in 1950, and his whereabouts remain unknown. Last year, Choi filed a lawsuit demanding compensation from North Korea and Chairman Kim.

However, even if this damages ruling is finalized, actual compensation is unlikely to be made. There is currently no way to collect the damages from North Korea and Chairman Kim. Previously, in July of last year, the court also ruled in favor of plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed by veterans who were forced into labor as North Korean prisoners of war during the Korean War against North Korea and Chairman Kim. At that time, the court ordered North Korea and Chairman Kim to pay 21 million won per veteran.
