View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Lotte Property & Development announced on the 25th that about 30 people, including 10 members of the National Assembly such as Kim Seong-hwan, Chairman of the Carbon Neutrality Special Committee, Kim Dong-jin, Director of the Water Resources Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Environment, and Park Jae-hyun, President of the Korea Water Resources Corporation, visited the Lotte World Tower Energy Center, which houses the largest geothermal energy facility in Korea.
Lotte Property & Development explained that this visit took place as Lotte World Tower has emerged as an excellent case of utilizing renewable energy such as geothermal energy amid the global focus on ESG management. The visiting lawmakers and experts received explanations about the current use of geothermal energy installed in the Energy Center on the 6th basement floor of Lotte World Tower and discussed ways to promote and activate geothermal energy distribution in Korea.
The largest portion of the renewable energy facilities at Lotte World Tower is the geothermal energy system that utilizes the temperature difference of the Han River water. Geothermal energy is a renewable energy that leverages the physical characteristic of water temperature being lower than the air in summer and warmer in winter for heating and cooling, thereby saving energy and reducing greenhouse gases.
Lotte World Tower supplies 50,000 tons of raw water daily and provides 3,000 refrigeration tons (RT), which accounts for 10% of the total heating and cooling. This is the largest scale facility currently operating inside a building in Korea. Operational results show an annual energy saving rate of about 36% and a carbon dioxide reduction effect of about 38% (2,340 tons) compared to other commonly used chillers and water heaters in Korea. Geothermal energy has economic advantages as it does not require cooling towers installed on building rooftops for large-scale facility heating and cooling, and it also helps reduce noise and urban heat island effects.
On the 6th basement floor of Lotte World Tower and Lotte World Mall, there is an energy center covering approximately 20,000 square meters, which serves as the heart of the building. In addition to geothermal energy, this center produces about 12% of the total energy consumption through geothermal heating and cooling systems, high-insulation glass usage, solar collectors, solar power generation, wind power generation, reuse of reclaimed and rainwater, and recovery of heat from domestic wastewater. Recognized for its excellence, it received the Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED for buildings over 100 floors in 2017. In 2018, it issued a $200 million sustainable bond in the overseas capital market, the first for a supertall building. Lotte Property & Development stated, "Through this bond, which combines green bonds and social bonds, we contribute to investments in eco-friendly power facilities and the creation of social jobs, continuously practicing ESG management."
Ryu Je-don, CEO of Lotte Property & Development, said, "Lotte World Tower is an eco-friendly landmark designed from the planning stage to consider the production and efficient operation of renewable energy," adding, "We will continue to efficiently operate eco-friendly power facilities to further contribute to greenhouse gas reduction and strive for ESG management."
