View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] Samsung C&T, the first in the industry to establish an Interfloor Noise Research Institute, has succeeded in developing a 'floor slab' that can drastically reduce interfloor noise.
Samsung C&T Construction Division announced on the 23rd that it has developed a technology that can increase the thickness of the floor slab to reduce interfloor noise without affecting the floor height and has completed the patent application.
The newly developed "floor impact sound reduction method through slab thickness variation" is a specialized technology that increases the slab thickness of specific parts from the existing 210mm floor slab to 250mm. It is characterized by achieving a noise reduction effect similar to increasing the thickness of the entire floor slab.
Samsung C&T explained that when this method is applied, it realizes nearly 90% of the vibration and noise reduction effect that can be obtained by increasing the entire floor slab to 250mm.
Since there is no change in the overall thickness of the floor structure, it does not affect the building's floor height. Until now, many opinions held that thickening the floor slab was the most practical way to reduce interfloor noise, but in this case, the floor height increases, resulting in a decrease in the number of floors and households.
In addition, Samsung C&T plans to tackle the fundamental problem of interfloor noise through joint research with industry, academia, and research institutes related to structural types and finishing methods. First, to verify the actual interfloor noise levels according to the structural types of apartment buildings, it signed a research service contract with the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology.
It will also analyze residents' perceived levels of interfloor noise with the Architectural Acoustics Laboratory at the University of Seoul and develop indicators for setting target levels of interfloor noise. Research on finishing methods to meet the standards of the interfloor noise post-verification system scheduled to be implemented next year will be conducted with KCC Central Technology Research Institute.
To study structural types of apartment buildings with significant noise reduction effects and verify actual interfloor noise reduction effects, a total of 13 experimental housing units will also be constructed.

A representative from Samsung C&T's Interfloor Noise Research Institute said, "Until now, most research on interfloor noise reduction has focused on improving material performance," and added, "Samsung C&T's Interfloor Noise Research Institute plans to introduce interfloor noise reduction technologies that break the existing framework through research in various fields, including structural types, materials, and construction methods."
