Damyang-gun Launches 'Life Love Suicide Prevention Campaign' to Raise Awareness on Suicide Prevention Importance
Concurrent Home Visit Services for Depression-Vulnerable Groups, Focused Management of High-Risk Suicide Groups
[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] On the 19th, Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that it conducted a ‘Life Love Suicide Prevention Publicity Campaign’ to raise awareness about the actual state of suicide rates in Korea, which ranks among the highest among OECD countries, and the importance of suicide prevention.
This campaign was held around Damyang Market and the terminal area as a measure to prepare for the phenomenon of relatively increased suicide rates during the spring season when temperatures rise.
The increase in suicide rates in spring is due to various factors such as seasonal elements like increased sunlight, pollen, and fine dust, relative deprivation arising from the hopeful atmosphere of spring, and maladaptation to new situations, which is a phenomenon commonly observed worldwide.
Moreover, this spring, the need for attention and preventive management of mental health has further increased due to depression and lethargy caused by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
Accordingly, the county is conducting depression screening using visiting services targeting vulnerable groups such as the elderly and pregnant women in parallel with the ‘Life Love Suicide Prevention Publicity Campaign,’ and is focusing on managing high-risk suicide groups by linking with social service providers within the local community.
In addition, along with street campaigns and banners, they plan to continue and actively promote suicide prevention by sending check-in text messages and providing telephone counseling to potential suicide risk groups to prevent giving up precious lives.
