On the 18th, the Supreme Court's First Division (Presiding Justice Kim Seonsu) confirmed the lower court's ruling sentencing Choo, who was indicted on charges including defamation, violation of the Assembly and Demonstration Act, and extortion, to 10 months in prison.
Choo was indicted on charges of conspiring with former NIS Director Won Sei-hoon and others to hold orchestrated rallies with support from the NIS. Investigations revealed that through this, he organized condemnation rallies against opposition politicians criticizing the Lee Myung-bak government in 2010 and rallies condemning actor Moon Seong-geun, who was involved in the opposition unification movement in 2011.
He was also indicted for extorting 22 million won by threatening to continue protests in front of CJ Group headquarters in 2013, claiming that the group's affiliated broadcaster's political satire program was 'left-leaning.'
The first trial found most charges except extortion to be guilty and sentenced him to 1 year and 10 months in prison with a 4-year probation.
However, the second trial overturned the original ruling and sentenced him to 10 months in prison, ordering his immediate incarceration. The court stated, "Acts assisting the NIS's political involvement are highly illegal," and added, "Without appropriate punishment, it is difficult to prevent recurrence."
