Gwanak-gu Secures 21.8 Billion KRW for Sewerage Maintenance Budget, Full-Scale Project Launch
Comprehensive Sewer Pipeline Maintenance, Sewer Pipeline Unit Improvement, Repair of Defective Sewer Manholes, and 14 Other Projects... Contributing to Flood Prevention in Low-Lying Areas and Preemptive Measures Against Road Subsidence Caused by Aging Sewer Pipelines
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) is launching a sewer maintenance project to prevent flooding in low-lying areas and to prevent road collapses caused by aging sewer pipes.
The district secured a total budget of 21.8 billion KRW, including 17.8 billion KRW from the city and 4 billion KRW from the district, completed preliminary procedures such as design for the sewer maintenance project, and began full-scale work starting in March.
The main sewer facilities managed by Gwanak-gu include 38 km of sewer box culverts, 367 km of circular pipelines, 11,005 manholes, and 26,177 rainwater inlets.
In particular, 65% of these sewer pipes are over 30 years old, requiring special maintenance and reinforcement.
Accordingly, the district will implement a total of 14 sewer management and maintenance projects, including comprehensive sewer pipe maintenance, unit improvement of sewer pipes, repair of defective sewer manholes, and emergency restoration of sewer facilities.
First, to maintain aging sewer pipes and prevent flooding in low-lying areas, the 'Sillim 1 and Sadang Drainage Basin Comprehensive Sewer Pipe Maintenance Project,' which has been underway since 2019, will continue this year with an investment of 13.7 billion KRW from the city, aiming to repair 10 km of aging sewer pipes in Seowon-dong, Seorim-dong, Sinwon-dong, and Namhyeon-dong.
Additionally, in nine districts including Cheongnyong-dong, a unit improvement project for 3.8 km of sewer pipes will be conducted to enhance flow capacity and prevent road collapse accidents in advance, while 164 defective sewer manholes on roads will be repaired, contributing to accident prevention.
Meanwhile, last year the district invested a total of 26.3 billion KRW to maintain and complete 19 km of aging and defective sewer pipes, actively promoting sewer projects such as dredging before the rainy season to improve sewer performance, earning the honor of being selected as the best autonomous district.
Notably, the district applied the 'Partial Excavation Replacement Method for Sewer Pipes,' patented in December 2018, to the aging sewer pipe maintenance project to prevent road collapses, achieving reliable quality control and timely project completion by excavating and improving only damaged parts of the sewer pipes.
This year, the district plans to ensure advanced sewer management through public sewer quality improvement measures such as introducing the Gang Gamchan mascot safety barrier to enhance construction site aesthetics and installing integrated gratings that improve existing rainwater inlet odor blocking facilities in densely populated multi-use areas.
