[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Eun-young] Andrew Cuomo, the 63-year-old Governor of New York State and once considered a leading candidate for the next U.S. Democratic presidential nomination, has become embroiled in allegations of spousal abuse following a series of sexual misconduct scandals.
On the 12th (local time), journalist and author Michael Schneider, in a contribution to the entertainment magazine Vanity Fair, claimed that "Governor Cuomo abused his former spouse Kerry Kennedy." Schneider is a close associate of Cuomo who has covered him for years and even authored his biography.
Schneider reported, citing a close acquaintance of Kerry, that "shortly after Kerry demanded a divorce from Governor Cuomo in September 2002, she had to lock herself in the bathroom and sleep there more than once to escape abuse."
At the time, Kerry reportedly told a friend, "As a human rights activist for women abused by their husbands, I am now enduring such abuse myself." Kerry Kennedy, who worked as a human rights lawyer, is the daughter of former U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy and the niece of former President John F. Kennedy.
Kerry, who married Governor Cuomo in 1990, reportedly requested a divorce in 2003, stating that he "failed to fulfill a normal role as a father."
Schneider asserted, "Governor Cuomo is determined to succeed at any cost and manages organizations and people harshly." He added, "He demands obedience and despises anything beyond his control."
Meanwhile, Governor Cuomo is currently facing allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct from seven women, including former subordinates. On the 13th, The New York Times (NYT) editorial stated, "Cuomo has lost political allies and public trust. He is in a state where it is difficult to perform his duties," urging him to resign.
