[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Eun-young] Legendary boxer Marvin Hagler has passed away at the age of 66.
On the 14th (local time), according to local U.S. media, Hagler's wife, Kay G. Hagler, announced that her husband Marvin Hagler died at their home in New Hampshire.
The wife wrote, "I regret to make a very sad announcement," adding, "Today, unfortunately, my beloved husband 'Marvelous Marvin' (Marvin Hagler's nickname) unexpectedly passed away at his home here in New Hampshire," and further requested, "Our family asks for privacy during this difficult time."
Born in May 1954, Hagler was from the Newark slums in New Jersey, USA. Following his mother's teaching to "not fight with others," he learned boxing instead of street fighting, and at the age of 18 in 1973, he won the National Amateur Championship. Soon after turning professional, he defeated Alan Minter in 1980 to become the unified middleweight champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC) and the World Boxing Association (WBA).
Hagler, who established himself as the world's strongest middleweight boxer for about eight years in professional boxing, became even more famous for his matches against formidable rivals. In 1983, he won a unanimous decision against Roberto Dur?n, and in 1985, he defeated Thomas Hearns with a 3rd-round KO.

In 1987, he showcased a 'legendary match' against Sugar Ray Leonard. Hagler gave up two of his three championship belts to face Leonard, who had declared a comeback after retirement. However, Hagler ultimately lost amid judging controversy in this match, and when Leonard declined his rematch request, Hagler retired as is.
