Gwangju Nam-gu 추진 of Four Major Management Measures for 'High-Concentration Fine Dust'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Byeong-nae) announced on the 11th that as part of the government's fine dust reduction policy, it will implement fine dust management measures including the operation of eco-friendly road water trucks efficient in removing ultrafine dust, operation of illegal fine dust emission monitors, support for installing low-NOx boilers, and restrictions on the operation of Grade 5 emission vehicles.
First, Nam-gu decided to operate eco-friendly water trucks along a 9 km section of major arterial roads, Daenam-daero and Seomun-daero, within the district whenever emergency fine dust reduction measures are issued under climatic conditions above 5℃, from this month through December, which is the high concentration fine dust period.
To this end, Nam-gu invested 300 million KRW earlier this year to purchase a 14-ton class CNG vehicle. This vehicle will patrol a 4 km section of Daenam-daero including the Health Management Association~Nam-gu Office~Nam Gwangju Overpass and a 5 km section of Seomun-daero including Nam-gu Office~Gwangju University~Bitgoeul Senior Health Town.
Monitoring activities will also be conducted to block illegal fine dust emissions.
Nam-gu will deploy four monitors to inspect illegal burning of waste materials at construction sites and odor-causing businesses, and will continue guidance and inspections of air and wastewater emission facilities.
In addition, projects supporting the installation of low-NOx boilers, which reduce nitrogen oxides causing fine dust while improving energy efficiency, and policies restricting the operation of Grade 5 emission vehicles are currently being implemented.
Since February, Nam-gu has invested 316 million KRW to support the installation of residential low-NOx boilers targeting 740 general households and 280 low-income households within the district, and on days when emergency fine dust reduction measures are issued, monitoring is conducted throughout the district from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
A Nam-gu official stated, “We will actively respond to climate change such as high concentration fine dust to protect the health of residents in the district and do our best to create a pleasant air environment.”
